Ankle distorsion

definition: bandinjury of the ankle by forced rotation in the ankle

Causes:
forced eversion (rotate from the body. Gives rupture of the medial ankle band) or inversie (rotate towards the body. Gives rupture of the lateral ankle band) or the feet. Be ware of fracures of the ankle and Maisonneuve injury.

Symptoms:
Pain
Swelling (through bruises)
Abnormal movement (through band injury)

Complications:
Recidives
Swelling lastst longer than 1 year
Chronic instability of the ankle
Not diagnosing fractures of the ankle and Maisonneuve injury

Diagnostics:
X-ankle to rule out fractures in the aterior-posterior and lateral directlyion. Possibly also of the feet. Apply the Ottawa ankle rules deside is a X-ray is meaningfull:
-pain in the lateral malleolus and 6 cm above it
-pain in the medial malleolus and 6 cm above it
-unable to stand on the foot
-pain in the region of the basis of os metatarsale V
-pain in the region of the os naviculare

Treatment:
Always conservative. First icepacking. Afterwards tape 5-7 days with loading untill pain or hydrops arrise. Sometimes plaster and behind splint.

Recovery within 6 weeks
